Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with Exmoor on our doorstep there is a rich variety of stunning dog walks from Coulscott. You can explore the woodlands, lush valleys, dramatic coast paths or rugged open heathlands of North Devon. One of our favourite walks leads you to our local dog friendly pub, the Hunters Inn at Heddons Valley, where you can enjoy a meal and a drink in the most idyllic setting. With dog-friendly beaches, and a wide range of visitor attractions, you will be spoilt for choice for places to go.

Exmoor

Spectacularly beautiful and awe inspiring, the wilds of Exmoor are just half a mile from our gates! With over 700 miles of footpaths and bridle ways, tumbling waterfalls and rivers, heather topped hills the National Park looks beautiful whatever the time of year. Whilst exploring this huge doggy paradise right on our doorstep, you may get to see wild ponies, birds of prey, red deer and ancient horned sheep amongst other things.

Combe Martin

Our nearby sheltered bay is perfect for many recreations including kayaking and paddle-boarding and it attracts seals and dolphins too, but most importantly is dog friendly too for most of the year (sadly dogs are not allowed between May 1 and September 30). At high tide the beach is a pebbly sand but as the tide retreats it reveals a sandy beach and some of the best rock pools along the whole coast! The nearest beach is also a big hit with the dogs (for most of the year!).

Hangman Cliffs & The South West Coast Path

An ideal base for a walking holiday, you can set out on foot from our cottages with the South West Coastal Path just half a mile away offering some awe-inspiring walks along the rugged North Devon coastline AONB. Our nearest natural attraction is the Hangman cliffs, consisting of Great Hangman and Little Hangman, where Exmoor meets the sea! Great Hangman, with its summit at over 1,000 feet is the highest sea cliff in England and the highest point on the South West Coast Path!

Hunters Inn & Heddon Valley

There are three great dog walks from the Hunter’s Inn which is also a dog friendly pub. Hunter’s Inn is set at the heart of the Heddon Valley and its network of footpaths and coastal and woodland trails. It’s a dog-walker’s heaven, and we’ve selected three great walks for you and your four-legged friend to enjoy during your stay. There’s also a bonus walk in the nearby Watersmeet Valley, with a stop-off at the dog-friendly Watersmeet tea rooms for a well-deserved Devon cream tea…

Whistlandpound Resevoir 

Wistlandpound Reservoir is the perfect destination for a short walk with some nice picnic spots. Sometimes you just want to go for a short stroll in beautiful and peaceful surroundings, leaving the longer walks for a day when you’ve got more oomph. So, on a fine afternoon if you can tear yourselves away from Coulscott, you can drive the short distance to nearby Wistlandpound Reservoir for a walk which is also good for dogs; they can come off the lead, but exercise your own judgement around the picnics!

Arlington Court 

The National Trust’s Arlington Court is a great spot for your family day out with your dogs. Your furry friends will love exploring the great outdoors, and there’s plenty to discover. Go for a stroll through the beautiful formal Victorian Gardens and see how many flowers you can spot as you stroll past the pond, or go for an adventure on a woodland walk – don’t forget to keep your eyes out for deer! Numerous bridleways and National Trust marked-out walks of varying length/difficulty are on offer throughout the vast estate grounds.

Lee Bay  

Nearby Lee Bay is dog friendly all year round! A charming sand and shingle beach backing onto an equally charming village. The bay is flanked on either side by an imposing rocky coastline. Set in a wooded combe which is sometimes referred to as “Fuchsia Valley” Lee Bay has no problem living up to it’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status.

Woolacombe’s Middle Beach and Putsborough

Take your pick – these popular North Devon sandy beaches are a highlight of the summer; for sunbathers and dogs-who-love-digging alike! Coulscott is just twenty minutes from the “Best Beach in Britain” – Woolacombe, with over three miles of golden sands. The good news is that dogs are allowed everywhere on Middle Beach and Putsborough (except for the very far left of the beach from Easter until November 1st).

Dramatic river gorge and ancient woodland with National Trust tea rooms set in stunning surroundings and serving the most heavenly Devon cream teas – freshly baked every day, and oozing with clotted cream and local jams it’s the ultimate treat on ANY holiday for our dog owners! Whether you are looking for a short stroll, or a proper hike with your dog, the area around Watersmeet cannot be beaten for its variety in trails and landscapes.

This dog friendly pub is a must! A classic British 17th century free house in the pretty village of Georgeham. With a great friendly atmosphere, fantastic food and open fires. The best Sunday lunch in the area. Perfect finale to a great day spent on the beach with your hound at nearby Putsborough!

Saunton Sands

One of the best known North Devon beaches, which also allow you to take your dogs 365 days a year is Saunton Sands (although owners are asked to keep their pets on leads in front of the beach hut area at the start of the beach). Three and a half miles of golden sand backed by one of the most unique and impressive dune systems in the country. Popular with families, longboard surfers and dogs!
