Blossoming Biodiversity at Coulscott

Springtime brings new beginnings, and at Coulscott House Holiday Cottages, we are thrilled to share some exciting news.

Thanks to the generous grant received from the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s Sustainable Development Fund, we have embarked on a journey to enhance our landscape with a stunning Wildflower Meadow and Orchard. Teaming up with the esteemed Bee charity, West Country Buzz, we recently planted 500 wildflower plug plants in our lookout field, a picturesque highland that offers breathtaking views for miles around. We cannot wait for our guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of our blossoming acre of wildflowers, while also contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity.

A Haven for Bees (and Guests!):
Recognizing the crucial role of pollinators in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, we were delighted to welcome several agricultural students from Petroc College in Barnstable on our planting day. Together, we planted over 25 native fruit trees, carefully chosen to attract and support local bee populations. Our newly established orchard promises a delightful experience for our guests, who can indulge in the beauty of the surroundings while cherishing the fruits of nature’s labor.

Supporting Native Bees:
While honeybees are often the focus of beekeeping efforts, we have learned from our partners at West Country Buzz that certain native bee species are in decline and require special attention. Following their guidance, we have decided not to install hives at Coulscott House. This choice enables us to prioritize the well-being of rarer bee species that are in need of nurturing and protection. By creating a rich habitat through the Wildflower Meadow and Orchard, we aim to provide a safe haven where all bees can thrive.

Expanding Our Green Haven:
Our commitment to the environment extends beyond the Wildflower Meadow and Orchard. We are proud to share that we recently received 45 Native trees from the Devon County Council as part of their winter tree planting scheme. Taking full advantage of this opportunity, we have planted these trees within our grounds, enriching the natural landscape for the enjoyment of all our guests. From now on, these majestic trees will provide shade, oxygen, and an enhanced sense of tranquility, making Coulscott House a true haven of greenery.

At Coulscott House Holiday Cottages, we firmly believe in the importance of sustainable and eco-conscious practices. With the support of the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, West Country Buzz, Petroc College, and Devon County Council, we have taken significant steps to enhance the biodiversity of our land while ensuring the well-being of native bee species. Our Wildflower Meadow, Orchard, and newly planted Native trees offer a testament to our commitment to creating a harmonious and thriving environment for both nature and our guests. We invite you to join us on this journey, immersing yourself in the beauty of nature and leaving behind a positive impact that will last for generations to come.
