Sustainability
At Coulscott we aim to be as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible and are continually working on this mission.
In 2022 we had a large solar array installed and aim to add to this in 2023 reducing our need for fossil fuels. Our swimming pool pumps and air heating system is powered by this new Solar, and Solar PV heats the water with a large battery system for electricity for the cottages with solar immersions so that this power source heats your hot water too.
We have three fast charge (22kw) EV chargers installed so you can charge at your convenience and have plenty of power to explore on your holiday. If you are able to charge on a sunny daytime then you will be using our solar power and helping reduce our carbon footprint.
We provide sustainable refillable toiletries from neighbouring Somerset bramleyproducts.co.uk which removes the use of single-use plastic.
If you wish to shop and eat local we have numerous suggestions in the digital guidebook provided for each property (see your booking confirmation email or scan the QR code in property) and we have arranged for the local farm shop, Besshill, to deliver direct to your property if required.
We provide recycling bins for cardboard, newspapers, glass, cans & plastics and food waste – we also have our own composting system which supplies all of Coulscott’s compost for the kitchen garden and grounds. Do talk to us or see our digital guide on what food waste is food heaven for Coulscott’s furry & feathered friends.
In 2023 we have worked with registered charity West Country Buzz and the North Devon AONB on re-wilding parts of Coulscott’s grounds in recognition of the current and on-going climate and nature crisis. We preserve and re-wild our grounds in keeping with our AONB status and the stunning North Devon Countryside. You will be able to see a wide variety of newly planted fruit trees in the Old Barn orchard and our 5 acre dog field. Our ‘Lookout’ field has been planted with hundreds of wildflower plugs and therefore is not mowed between May & September – it’s a wonderful place to sit and relax. You’ll also spot lots of little tree guards around Coulscott’s grounds – these are all native Oak, Ash & Sycamore trees.
We have an extensive Kitchen Garden and greenhouse which you can help themselves to – all plants are grown from seed at Coulscott or purchased from local growers. Do have a wander and a forage and if you are unsure do ask us what’s in season and ready to pick. Fresh eggs when our lovely free range hens are laying will be provided in your cottage and extras in the honesty shop – do check out the fabulous orange yolks!
